Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.
Nazca is a city and system of valleys on the southern coast of Peru. The city of Nazca is the largest in the Nazca Province. The name is derived from the Nazca culture, which flourished in the area between 100 BC and AD 800. This culture was responsible for the Nazca Lines and the ceremonial city of Cahuachi. They also constructed additional underground aqueducts, named puquios, in a regional system that still functions today. The first puquios are believed to have been built by the preceding Paracas culture.
One of the most famous attractions in Nazca is the Nazca Lines, a collection of ancient geoglyphs carved into the desert landscape. These mysterious lines depict various animals, plants, and geometric shapes, and are believed to have been created by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE. To this day, the purpose of the lines remains unknown, but they have become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for anyone visiting Peru.
Aside from the Nazca Lines, Nazca is also home to the Cantalloc Aqueducts, an impressive system of underground channels that were used by the Nazca culture to transport water from the Andes Mountains to the arid desert region. The aqueducts are a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Nazca people, and are a fascinating glimpse into ancient engineering.
